Grand Junction seniors have an upcoming opportunity to attend a free seminar focused on planning their next life chapter and navigating the process of downsizing. Debbie Rich, representing the organization Next Chapter, is leading the initiative to assist local residents with what can often be a mix of emotions and uncertainty as they consider their future.

Rich indicated that many seniors she has worked with previously were unsure about what their future might entail, signaling a common need for guidance on various aspects of long-term planning. The seminar aims to provide comprehensive support on everything from exploring housing options to making informed decisions for the next stage of life.

The upcoming event will feature a panel of 10 speakers, each prepared to offer insights and practical advice. These speakers will help attendees understand the complexities of the downsizing process and empower them to make confident choices about their future living situations and lifestyle.

Rich clarified that while many people might associate downsizing primarily with moving into a smaller physical space, the concept is often about finding a living situation that aligns more effectively with a person's current lifestyle. This could mean seeking a home with less maintenance, fewer stairs, or one that offers more freedom to travel. Ultimately, it often translates to finding a home that is simply easier to manage on a day-to-day basis.

To ensure preparedness and personal control, Rich strongly encourages individuals to begin their planning early, ideally around age 65. Starting this process proactively can help prevent major life decisions from being made under pressure during a health crisis or from being left to family members. Rich highlighted a key benefit of this foresight, stating, “The biggest benefit is peace of mind.” She added that having a plan firmly in place allows individuals to maintain control over their own future.

This Next Chapter seminar is scheduled to take place next Wednesday, October 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will be held at the Grand Junction Recreation Center, located at 2836 Recreation Way. Admission to the seminar is free for all attendees interested in preparing for their next chapter.
