The Tigers wasted no time establishing dominance, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter of the rivalry matchup.
Among the early scores for Grand Junction was a punt return touchdown by Marcus Martinez. Quarterback Andrew Neese also contributed with a touchdown on a keeper. The Tigers' strong defensive effort held Fruita Monument to a single score throughout the game. Preston Fife's passing interception further fueled Grand Junction's offense, setting up another scoring opportunity. This win follows last season's meeting, where Fruita Monument narrowly defeated Grand Junction 10-7.
Further south, the Montrose Red Hawks were locked in a high-scoring contest against the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles, ultimately falling 40-33. Montrose held a 27-25 lead after a run by Lincoln Jones set up a quarterback keeper touchdown by Cade Saunders. However, Mountain Vista responded in the fourth quarter, with Hudson Modrzewski scoring to put the Golden Eagles ahead 33-32. Jones answered for Montrose, but Brody Callister's score put Mountain Vista back on top with about a minute remaining. The game concluded on the final play when Saunders was hit as he threw an incomplete pass.
Closer to home, the Plateau Valley Cowboys earned their first win of the season with a dominant 48-20 victory over the Gilpin County Eagles. Both teams entered the matchup with 0-2 records, but the Cowboys started strong, taking a 12-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Multiple touchdowns from Austin Grundy and Vance Sheffield fueled an explosive ground game that propelled the Cowboys to their significant win.
Elsewhere, the Grand Valley Cardinals are still seeking their first win of the year after a 44-6 loss to the Platte Canyon Huskies in their home opener. The Cardinals will have a bye week before hosting the Olathe Pirates in their first league match of the year. The Olathe Pirates, currently 3-0, recently defeated the Bayfield Wolverines 45-8.
