Grand River Mosquito Control District has launched a new program designed to help Grand Valley residents reduce late-season mosquito populations by offering financial incentives for proper tire disposal. Announced on Tuesday, Sept. 8, this initiative aims to eliminate a common breeding ground for mosquitoes: abandoned tires left unattended on properties.
Mosquitoes, which typically emerge in the spring, can remain active and nuisance-causing well into the autumn months. According to Tom Moore, the Grand River Mosquito Control District district manager, abandoned tires create ideal conditions for these pests. Moore stated that tires "can hold water for extended periods of time, creating an ideal environment for mosquitoes to breed." He expressed hope that the new program would encourage more locals to proactively dispose of old tires, addressing potential breeding sites before they become a larger problem for the community.
The program, which was officially authorized in August by the Grand River Mosquito Control District board, is funded through the district's tax base. It offers a reimbursement of 75% of the recycling or disposal fees for eligible tires. Property owners can be reimbursed for a maximum of nine tires per property each calendar year. Additionally, the program includes a one-time $30 transportation reimbursement to help cover the cost of moving the tires.
Eligibility for the program extends to residential, noncommercial, and vacant or nonoperational industrial properties. All participating properties must be located within the Grand River Mosquito Control District tax district. The types of tires accepted include passenger car, SUV, light truck, and large heavy-equipment tires. However, the district specifies that tires must be “free of excessive mud, water, vegetation, concrete and internal debris” to be eligible for reimbursement.
To participate, individuals must first complete a preapproval application form before proceeding with tire disposal. After the tires have been disposed of at an approved regional waste facility, applicants are required to submit an official receipt detailing the specific tire disposal charge, along with their completed application. Both documents must be submitted within 30 days of the disposal date.
For properties with more than nine tires or those requiring bulk tonnage disposal, the Grand River Mosquito Control District advises requesting an on-site inspection. If an active mosquito breeding infestation is documented during this inspection, the property may qualify for a one-time exemption from the nine-tire limit.
