This hard-earned win positions CMU to get back to a winning record as they prepare for what is described as one of the more daunting four-game stretches any team in Division II will encounter.
The Hardrockers proved to be a formidable opponent, entering the game with a 2-0 record and having already registered a victory against a Division I program. South Dakota Mines had also historically presented challenges for the Mavericks, having won two of the last five matchups between the two teams. The game itself was played in Rapid City, in what is known as a consistently hostile road environment, where fans and their parked cars were situated close to the field, adding to the intense atmosphere for the visiting Mavericks.
South Dakota Mines took an early lead, holding a 17-10 advantage at halftime. The Mavericks, trailing in the second half, found themselves in a test of their resilience, needing to respond repeatedly with points to stay in contention. In the third quarter, CMU Quarterback Cole Hansen demonstrated his ability to make plays under pressure. While evading defenders and rolling to the right, Hansen turned and fired a pass 'to the blindside,' connecting with Alex Turpin, who was 'wide open in the end zone' for a touchdown. The host Hardrockers, however, were quick to answer. However, Sam Eccles' 27-yard field goal attempt 'was no good,' failing to put points on the board for the Hardrockers. With this missed opportunity, the Mavericks knew they simply needed to score to clinch the victory. Hartson, operating as the 'wildcat quarterback,' then took control, scoring a touchdown that ultimately 'iced the game.'
