Jarques “Jock” Ratliff, 51, appeared in court Monday where he was denied bond and entered a plea of not guilty to a murder charge. Ratliff is accused in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four whose body was discovered hanging from a tree by a black cord behind an abandoned home off Road of Remembrance in Jackson, Mississippi. The court appearance marks a significant step in a case that has drawn considerable attention since Fortune's death.
From the outset of the investigation, Fortune's family maintained that she did not take her own life. Their concerns were later supported by official findings. Last Thursday, the medical examiner officially ruled Fortune’s death a homicide. This critical determination "paved the way for investigators to secure an arrest warrant" for Ratliff, according to information released by Jackson Police.
Following the homicide ruling and the issuance of an arrest warrant, Jackson Police announced Ratliff’s arrest last Friday, more than a month after Fortune's body was initially found. Chief Brackney of the Jackson Police Department confirmed that officers had executed two search warrants as part of their investigation into Fortune's death. However, Ratliff was not present at either location when police arrived. He was subsequently located walking on Capitol Street and taken into custody by authorities.
While police have confirmed that Ratliff and Fortune knew each other, the exact nature of their relationship has not yet been publicly disclosed by investigators. Chief Brackney emphasized that the investigation is far from over. "We expect more arrests to come," Brackney stated, indicating that law enforcement believes other individuals may have been involved or possess knowledge pertinent to the case. The chief also articulated the department's strategy regarding public information, noting that "continued disclosure of a lot of the information puts the investigators at a disadvantage and could also compromise the integrity of this case," particularly since "certain things that the persons involved in this would know about this case."
Despite the arrest and the medical examiner's official ruling of homicide, investigators have not yet publicly revealed Fortune’s exact cause of death. The ongoing investigation continues as authorities pursue additional leads in a case that has garnered national attention.
