Kathey Dailey’s experience with a double cancer diagnosis in 2023 underscores the significant challenges uninsured individuals can face when accessing critical medical screenings. After experiencing stomach pain, Dailey visited an emergency room in 2023, which led to a diagnosis of uterine cancer.
Following the uterine cancer diagnosis, doctors strongly advised Dailey, then 59 years old, to get a mammogram – a screening she had never had before. Just two days after undergoing the mammogram, she received another phone call informing her she had breast cancer. Dailey is now receiving treatment for stage four metastatic breast cancer, a diagnosis that followed her initial uterine cancer discovery.
As a self-employed individual, Dailey did not have health insurance, which made the cost of medical procedures, including the crucial mammogram, a major concern. She learned that a program called Project Pink would cover the cost of her mammogram, providing a vital service when she needed it most. Project Pink collaborates with Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute and Charlotte Radiology to offer free mobile mammogram screenings specifically for uninsured women.
Dr. Rhea Rogers, a board-certified physician, emphasized that while screenings are important, they are only one part of a comprehensive approach to early detection. Rogers stated that "self-breast examination in conjunction with mammograms is going to give you your best shot at picking up something." This dual approach offers the most effective method for identifying potential issues early.
For women worried about the cost of screenings, Dr. Rogers advises exploring available resources and asking for help. She noted that "multiple clinics that will offer screening at an affordable price." Additionally, she suggested that individuals can speak with hospitals that have radiology departments, as they "will give cash discounts prices if you’re a direct pay like that, too, as well." Rogers encouraged individuals to research all available resources to ensure they receive necessary screenings.
