Colorado Mesa University's hockey team has opened its season at home with a dominant sweep, securing two significant victories over Colorado State. Playing on their home ice in Grand Junction, the Mavericks first defeated Colorado State with a final score of 9-2 in their season opener. They followed this up with an even more decisive win, shutting down Colorado State 10-1, completing a clean sweep to start their season strong. This performance gives local residents, CMU families, and students an early look at a potent Mavericks squad.
During the 10-1 victory, CMU established a commanding lead early in the game. The Mavericks led 3-0 after the first period, showcasing a strong offensive start. They continued to control the game through the second period, holding Colorado State scoreless through the first two periods of play. This defensive stand was anchored by senior goalie John Hickam, whose efforts were crucial in maintaining the shutout bid well into the third period. Hickam made several key saves, preventing Colorado State from finding the back of the net for much of the contest and keeping the momentum firmly with the Mavericks.
The Mavericks' offense also demonstrated its capability, particularly on special teams. CMU successfully converted on a power play opportunity, further extending their lead. This goal came after the team had already registered a couple of shots on goal that were initially stopped, highlighting their persistent attack. Senior forward Ben Pedigo was credited with scoring during this power play, pushing the score to 4-0 in favor of CMU. Pedigo's goal was a significant part of the team's overall run towards the final 10-1 score, underscoring the Mavericks' ability to capitalize on scoring chances and maintain pressure throughout the game.
Following this successful home stand, the CMU hockey team will embark on its first road trip of the season. Their schedule includes a trip to Nebraska, where they are set to play the University of Nebraska. After that game, the Mavericks will continue their travels in Nebraska, playing two additional games in Omaha. This road swing will test the team's early-season form away from the familiar environment of Grand Junction.
The Mavericks are scheduled to return home to Grand Junction later in the month, bringing collegiate hockey back to local fans. They will host Colorado Mines for a Friday-Saturday series, which is slated to begin on the 17th of the month. This will be another opportunity for the community, including students and families, to support the team. Later in October, CMU will conclude the month with another home series, this time against Arizona State. This Friday-Saturday series against the Sun Devils is set to start on Friday the 30th, with the second game scheduled for Halloween. These upcoming home games provide multiple chances for Grand Junction residents to see the CMU hockey team in action.
