The Kindness Creates Community Foundation (KCCF), the charitable arm of the Grand Junction Area Realtor Association (GJARA), has announced a significant initiative to bolster construction education and workforce development for students across the Western Slope. KCCF is offering up to $30,000 in matching funds, an effort designed to support the Careers in Construction Western Slope program.
This matching opportunity means that contributions made to the Careers in Construction Western Slope program through the end of 2026 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by KCCF. If enough contributions are received to secure the full match, the combined effort could generate a total of $60,000 dedicated to the program. This substantial funding is aimed at cultivating a skilled local workforce and addressing critical needs within the community, particularly concerning housing and development in the Grand Valley.
The Careers in Construction Western Slope program receives local backing from the Housing & Building Association of Western Colorado. This vital program plays a key role in connecting area students with essential construction education, industry-recognized certifications, and direct access to local professionals currently working in the field. The goal is to provide practical pathways for young people to enter the construction trades right here in Mesa County.
Don Potter, who serves as president for both GJARA and KCCF, spoke to the foundation's motivation behind this investment. Potter stated that KCCF "believes in investing in our future," and he underscored that there is no better way to do so than by supporting the local education of future tradespeople. This perspective highlights a commitment to developing local talent to meet local industry demands.
Potter further elaborated on the program's reach, noting that Careers in Construction actively collaborates with District 51 high schools. Through this partnership, the program works to train, support, and mentor students who express an interest in pursuing construction careers after graduation. This early engagement is crucial for guiding students towards viable and in-demand professions within their home community.
The KCCF and GJARA president also drew a direct line between the investment in workforce development and the broader regional need for additional housing. This connection indicates that by supporting the training of more construction workers, the foundation sees a path toward increasing the capacity to build new homes and commercial spaces vital for Grand Junction's growth.
Shayna Heiney, the executive director of the Housing & Building Association of Western Colorado, emphasized the profound impact of the matching grant. Heiney explained that this initiative gives the community a powerful opportunity to significantly increase the overall effect of their financial contributions to the program. She noted that the grant provides an incredible opportunity for the community to double the impact of every donation made.
Contributions from individual members of the Grand Junction Area Realtor Association are also a part of this matching effort. These donations can come through their participation in the annual Parade of Homes event, as well as various other fundraising activities organized by GJARA. To reiterate, all donations made before the close of 2026 are eligible to be matched by the Kindness Creates Community Foundation, providing a sustained window for community support.
