Grand Junction High School's football team achieved a 38-0 shutout victory against Greeley West at Stocker Stadium on Friday night, improving their season record to 6-1. The Homecoming win was significantly bolstered by crucial plays from the Tigers' special teams unit, which provided the initial spark after early offensive drives stalled.
After turning the ball over on downs in their first two offensive possessions, Grand Junction's special teams unit made the first impact. Senior defensive end Trevon Young blocked a Greeley West punt, with fellow Tiger lineman Evan Fischer recovering the ball. This turnover directly led to the first score of the game, as senior Paxton Webber ran 12 yards for a touchdown two plays later, establishing a lead Grand Junction would not relinquish.
The special teams unit once again contributed significantly in the fourth quarter. Senior Kolton Music blocked a second Spartan punt. With Greeley West already deep in their own territory, Music's block sent the football through the end zone for a safety, adding two points to the Tigers' score and returning possession to Grand Junction. While the Tigers fumbled on the subsequent drive, the play further cemented their control of the game.
On offense, senior running back Elias Morgan was a standout performer, scoring three rushing touchdowns and accumulating over 100 yards for the evening. His touchdowns included a first-quarter red zone run, a third-quarter goal line run that extended the team's advantage, and a 25-yard rushing score in the final minutes of the contest.
Despite Morgan's strong individual effort, the Tigers' offensive unit faced turnover issues. Junior quarterback Andrew Neese was intercepted twice when passes were deflected into the air, and the team also lost possession on two fumbles throughout the game.
However, Grand Junction's defense showcased its resilience by holding steady after all four turnovers, ultimately preserving the shutout. This marks the Tigers' second consecutive shutout victory, following a dominant performance on the road against Northridge. Over the last two weeks, Grand Junction has outscored its opponents by a combined total of 81-0.
Individual defensive highlights included junior defensive lineman Alex McGrady and senior cornerback Izaak Martinez, both of whom intercepted passes. Martinez's interception in the third quarter featured an impressive zig-zagging return that would have been a pick-six, but the score was nullified due to an unnecessary roughness penalty against a Tiger teammate.
The 6-1 Tigers are set to travel next Friday for their next game, an away showdown against 4A Northern League foe Longmont. Kickoff from Longmont is scheduled for 7 p.m.
