Grand Valley Transit's paratransit service is set to expand its capacity with the addition of three new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, following a significant federal grant and approval from the Mesa County Commission. The Mesa County Regional Transportation Planning Office successfully secured a federal grant totaling more than $600,000 to facilitate this purchase, directly benefiting residents across the Grand Valley who rely on specialized transit options.
The Mesa County Commission formally approved the full $758,691 purchase order for these new vehicles during its meeting on October 6. This action enables Grand Valley Transit to acquire modern, efficient buses that will enhance its ability to serve more passengers requiring paratransit services. The funding structure for this acquisition involved a substantial federal contribution, demonstrating a commitment to improving local transportation infrastructure.
Specifically, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant covered the majority of the expenses, providing $644,877 of the total cost. This represents an 85 percent federal match for the bus purchase. The remaining 15 percent, amounting to $113,804, was the responsibility of the Grand Valley Regional Transportation Committee. This collaborative funding approach ensures that essential local services can be upgraded with significant support from federal programs.
The new paratransit buses are designed to run on compressed natural gas, a choice that carries both an initial cost difference and long-term operational benefits. While CNG-powered buses typically cost between $30,000 and $50,000 more than their diesel counterparts, depending on the specific vendor and bus type, this higher upfront investment is expected to be offset by the lower cost of fueling the vehicles with CNG over their operational lifespan. This strategic decision aligns with efforts to find more economical and potentially environmentally conscious fueling options for public transportation fleets.
Beyond their fuel source, the new buses will significantly boost the service's capacity. Each of the three new vehicles will have the capability to transport up to 12 passengers at a time. Crucially for paratransit users, these buses will also feature five dedicated positions for wheelchairs. This marks a substantial improvement over the normal capacity, which typically accommodates only two wheelchair positions. This increase in wheelchair capacity is particularly important for residents with mobility challenges, allowing GVT to provide more accessible and accommodating rides for a greater number of people throughout the Grand Valley. The arrival of these buses represents a direct investment in the daily lives and mobility of community members who depend on GVT's paratransit system for their transportation needs.
