Three high school softball teams from District 51 — Fruita Monument, Palisade, and Grand Junction — are set to compete in regional tournaments following the close of the regular season. Fruita Monument High School, fresh off an impressive league title, will host a Class 4A regional tournament this Saturday, ensuring postseason action remains on local fields at Canyon View Park.
Fruita Monument secured its fourth Southwestern League title in the past five years after an 11-game winning streak closed out their regular season. This late-season surge included a 10-1 victory over Montrose, a team they had previously lost to 9-5 on September 15. Palisade High School's win over Montrose also played a role in the Wildcats' path to the league championship. First-year head coach Randi Denton, who took over for longtime coach Adam Diaz, has led the team to a 20-win regular season. Denton, who has been with the program as an assistant since 2022, noted that the team's success stems from their ability to "play as a team," supporting each other and relying on one another. She emphasized that the girls "know that if they make a mistake their team is there behind them, and I think that’s something that has definitely been a big factor for them this year."
As the No. 4 seed in Class 4A, Fruita Monument will host the 4A Region 4 tournament at Canyon View Park. They are set to face No. 13 Frederick, No. 20 Air Academy, and No. 29 Thompson Valley. Coach Denton shared her approach for the upcoming tournament: "We’ve got to take this weekend one game at a time, and the girls just need to stay relaxed and play and enjoy what they’re doing." The top two teams from this regional will advance to the state tournament, scheduled for the weekend of October 23-24.
Palisade High School also earned a spot in the Class 4A postseason, largely due to their late-season win against Montrose. The Bulldogs are the No. 19 seed and will travel to Eaton on Friday to compete in the 4A Region 3 tournament. This regional is hosted by third-seeded Eaton and will also feature No. 14 Vista Ridge and No. 30 Pueblo Centennial.
Grand Junction High School, competing in its first fall season in Class 5A, secured the No. 19 seed in its class. The Tigers will head to Parker on Friday for the 5A Region 3 Tournament. Third-seeded Lutheran will host this regional, which also includes No. 13 Mountain Vista and No. 29 Cherry Creek.
Across the Southwestern League, other teams advancing to postseason play include ninth-seeded Montrose and No. 24 Durango, both traveling to Parker for the 4A Region 8 tournament at Ponderosa. Rifle, the No. 23 seed in 4A, will compete in the 4A Region 7 tournament in Colorado Springs, hosted by seventh-seeded Palmer Ridge. In Class 3A, No. 12 Delta will travel to Strasburg for the 3A Region 2 tournament, and No. 15 Cedaredge will head to Brush for the same regional. Like the 4A and 5A tournaments, the top two teams from each regional across all classifications will earn a berth in the state tournament.
