Grand Junction area high school tennis players will extend their season by another week, with one singles player and four doubles teams from District 51 qualifying for the Class 4A and Class 5A state tournaments. These athletes earned their spots after strong showings at regional tournaments held on Wednesday, October 7, and Thursday, October 8. The state championships are scheduled for Thursday, October 15, through Saturday, October 17.
At the Class 4A Region 8 Tournament, held at the Elliott Tennis Center on the Colorado Mesa University campus, Fruita Monument High School's No. 2 doubles team, comprising senior Gavin Bennett and sophomore Taylor Huston, secured a berth to the 4A state tournament. The Wildcats duo finished second in their regional bracket after a challenging, three-hour championship match against Aspen, ultimately falling 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Their state qualification was cemented after they defeated Steamboat Springs' William Volk and Ryan Becker 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals. Steamboat Springs later won the playback bracket, confirming Fruita Monument's second-place finish.
This marks senior Bennett's second consecutive trip to a state tournament, having previously competed in the Class 5A state tournament last fall as part of the Wildcats' No. 4 doubles team. Bennett shared his perspective on returning to state, stating, "It means everything to be back here." Huston emphasized the need for continued hard work following the close contest. Additionally, two District 51 players earned positions as alternates for the state tournament: Fruita Monument’s No. 1 singles player Carter Gray and the Wildcats’ No. 3 singles player Dylan Lee.
Meanwhile, on the Front Range, Grand Junction High School sent one singles player and three doubles teams to the 5A state tournament following their performance at the 5A Region 4 tournament, hosted by Ralston Valley in Arvada. Junior Grant Gear was the sole District 51 athlete to claim a regional title this season. Gear secured the No. 3 singles regional crown by defeating Rock Canyon’s Samuel Graham 6-2, 6-0, earning his individual spot at state for the second year in a row.
The Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team, brothers Gareth and Oliver Keller, also secured a state berth despite a 6-4, 6-4 loss to host Ralston Valley in the bracket championship. Their path to state was secured by a semifinal victory over Rock Canyon, who went on to win the playback championship. Similarly, Grand Junction’s No. 2 doubles pairing of Maximus Kintz and Beck Meyer qualified for state. They defeated the eventual playback champion, Rock Canyon, in the semifinals before being defeated by Ralston Valley 6-2, 6-1 in their championship match.
The Tigers’ No. 3 doubles team, Zach Nelson and Creed Hafey, secured their state berth through a more challenging route. After losing their bracket final to Ralston Valley 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, Nelson and Hafey faced a winner-take-all playback match against Rock Canyon. The Grand Junction duo prevailed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, ensuring the Tigers would be represented in four brackets at the state level. Grand Junction’s No. 2 singles player Jacob Smith also earned a position as an alternate for the state tournament.
The Class 5A state tennis tournament is scheduled to take place at Denver Tennis Park in Denver. The Class 4A state tournament will be held at Pueblo City Park in Pueblo. Both tournaments are set for Thursday, October 15, through Saturday, October 17.
