Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is reaffirming its commitment to making higher education accessible, guaranteeing admission to any high school graduate who achieves a 3.0 grade-point average or higher. This policy, which has been in place since 2024, provides a clear pathway for students from Grand Junction and across the state to attend the university.
Beyond simply guaranteeing a spot, CMU announced that students who graduate with a 3.2 GPA will be admitted to the university with no additional requirements. These students will also earn a minimum $3,000 scholarship, recognizing their strong academic performance. CMU noted that students with even higher GPAs are eligible for additional scholarship money, further incentivizing academic achievement.
The university's commitment builds on its ongoing efforts to make higher education more affordable and understandable for students and their families navigating the college admissions process. CMU aims to cut through what it describes as “confusing conditions and fine print” often associated with similar programs at other Colorado institutions.
CMU President John Marshall highlighted the university's philosophy, stating that while “a lot of universities are looking for ways to keep people out,” CMU is “trying to find ways to bring people in.” Marshall believes that other college and university programs frequently include additional requirements beyond GPA, such as standardized test scores, class rank mandates, specific coursework expectations, or distinctions between weighted and unweighted GPAs. In contrast, CMU’s GPA requirement “stands on its own,” offering a transparent path for students who have consistently performed well throughout high school.
President Marshall compared the admissions guarantee to the existing “CMU Promise,” which provides financial support for lower-income families. He stated that both programs offer a “similar straightforward approach” for students with good grades and for families seeking certainty about their student’s admission to CMU.
The university believes this simple message—earn a 3.0 GPA for guaranteed admission, or a 3.2 GPA for guaranteed admission plus at least $3,000 in scholarship support—can make a significant difference. CMU aims to ease the often-complicated and intimidating admissions process, helping reduce barriers for high school graduates and assisting them in seeing a clear path to college success at their local university.
This re-emphasis on guaranteed admission follows recent partnership announcements CMU made with Littleton Public Schools, Aurora Public Schools, and Englewood Schools, extending its reach and commitment to high school graduates statewide.
