Several popular cannabis vape products sold in Grand Junction and Palisade dispensaries were recalled Friday, September 25, after state officials found them to be contaminated with methylene chloride, a toxic chemical and carcinogen. The voluntary recall by Colorado manufacturer Staycon LLC, known by its brand name Craft, impacts multiple batches of nearly 50 products.
According to a joint health and safety advisory from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and Colorado Department of Revenue (DOR), the contaminated products were sold between March 27 and September 25. The advisory stated that the CDPHE and DOR "deem it a threat to public health and safety" when such ingredients are found in regulated marijuana. This advisory specifically includes production batches identified as having been produced using an ingredient containing the chemical.
The affected vapes, also known as dab carts or dab pens, were sold at some point in at least nine Grand Junction dispensaries, as listed in the state health and safety advisory. These include Native Roots Grand Junction at 683 Horizon Drive, Unit 110; The Grand Junction Greenery at 762 Horizon Drive; The Green Horizon at 739 Horizon Drive, Unit B; and Lucky Me Dispensary at 2648 Patterson Road, Unit C. Additionally, Palisade’s Happy Camper, located at 420 Wine Valley Road, was also listed in the advisory.
Individuals who purchased products from any of the impacted retailers are advised to check the label on their products. The advisory instructs consumers to look for manufacturer license numbers 404R-00170 and 404-00489. In addition to these license numbers, contaminated products also bear specific production batch numbers. A list of more than 100 batch numbers is available through state resources, and these numbers affect nearly 20 strains of cannabis. Examples of affected strains include Green Skunk, Super Lemon Haze, Fresh Squeeze, Maui Wowie, Diesel Dawg, and Blueberry Bubble.
The joint advisory noted that, at the time of its publishing, the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division had not received any adverse health event reports related to the contaminated products. However, due to the potential consumer health risks associated with methylene chloride, the Division encourages consumers to promptly report any adverse health events.
Individuals who believe they are experiencing adverse health effects from consuming the recalled product are urged to seek immediate medical attention. Following medical consultation, consumers are also encouraged to report the event to the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division. Information for submitting reports and staying updated on potential advisory changes is available through the state's official marijuana enforcement website.
This recall highlights the ongoing oversight by state agencies to ensure product safety in Colorado's regulated marijuana market. The focus remains on informing the public and mitigating potential health risks from contaminated products. Local residents who have purchased cannabis vape products should review their inventory against the state's advisory details to ensure their safety.
